A New Family

Step 1. Questions

There are many different kinds of families. They all experience different kinds of change. Each type of change, small or large, means that people must adjust .. Sometimes, babies or children are left without a parent or guardian to care for them. On the other hand, people sometimes want a child very much but cannot have one. When these two needs are brought together through the process of adoption, new and wonderful families can begin. How does a family change when there is an adoption?

Use this e-journal project as the opportunity to learn about the adoption process. The following questions can be used to guide your research:
  • What is adoption? Find out what it means for families.
  • What are the steps involved in adoption?
  • How many children are adopted each year in the United States? Research adoption in the United States.
  • What other questions do you have about adoption?
First, visit the Web sites listed in Step 2 to research the answers to these questions. Take notes in the note-taking boxes. You may also visit other approved Web sites, or research adoption in encyclopedias and other resources at the library.

Then, follow Steps 3 and 4 to write your report.

Step 2. Research

Research answers for the questions you were asked in Step 1. Visit these Web sites. Take notes about them on this page, too!

The Learning Center: Support for Adoptive Families
From the National Adoption Center, this site offers a lot of interesting information about adoption. Learn the words and terms to use about adoptions. You can explore many different resources about adoption using the same steps that families who are interested in adoption might go through.
