Analyze Fast-Food Breakfasts

Step 1. Questions

Fast-food is a quick and easy way to get a meal, but is it nutritious? People are becoming more aware of what they eat. They are making more healthful choices. Many fast-food restaurants are responding to the demand for more healthful choices on their menus. Are the fast-food restaurants doing enough? How healthful are the foods they offer?

In this e-journal activity you will focus on one meal, breakfast, to evaluate the nutritional quality of fast-food at two restaurants. The following questions will help you begin your investigation:
  • What breakfast selections are available at the fast-food restaurants? You may choose to evaluate the entire menu or one or two items.
  • What is the nutritional content of the food offered on the breakfast menu? Describe the caloric content, fat content, carbohydrates, and other nutritional values.
  • How do the two fast-food restaurants compare?
  • What other factors help determine the nutritional value of fast food?
First, visit the Web sites listed in Step 2 to research the answers to these questions. Take notes in the note-taking boxes. You may also visit other approved Web sites, or research nutrition in encyclopedias and other resources at the library. Most fast-food restaurants will provide nutritional information for each menu selection upon request.

Then, follow Steps 3 and 4 to write your report.

Step 2. Research

Research answers for the questions you were asked in Step 1. Visit these Web sites. Take notes about them on this page, too!

Drive-Thru Diet
From the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center this site provides nutritional information about twelve of America’s largest fast food chains. Simply click on the menu to get the nutrition facts.
