Find a Positive Group of Friends

Step 1. Questions

Sometimes children do not feel good about themselves. They may look for comfort from joining groups of people known for making wrong choices. These groups are gangs. Joining a gang can have life long costs. The good news is that there are also terrific groups of people with different interests. They can have a helpful effect on you and your community. How can someone find groups in the community who improve life for themselves and others? Where can you find special interest groups such as theatre groups, singing groups, or sports clubs?

For this e-journal project you will research groups that are positive. Find out all about groups in your community that have a good influence. Here are some questions to guide your research:
  • What are some outcomes of joining a group that has a positive influence?
  • What types of groups are available? Research groups at school and in the community?
  • How can a young person avoid gangs? Learn about skills that can help resist gangs.
  • What other questions do you have about positive groups of friends?
First, visit the Web sites listed in Step 2 to research the answers to these questions. Take notes in the note-taking boxes. You may also visit other approved Web sites, particularly sites for your local community. You can also research group behavior in encyclopedias and the availability of groups in your community through your chamber of commerce or at the library.

Step 2. Research

Research answers for the questions you were asked in Step 1. Visit these Web sites. Take notes about them on this page, too!

Peer Group Pressure
What is a peer group? What does positive and negative peer group pressure look like? Learn how to recognize both types of peer group pressure and what to do in a “dare” situation. The important message is that peer groups are made up of individuals, but as an individual you have a right to have your own opinions, to feel safe, and to respect other people’s rights too.
