Keeping Food Safe

Step 1. Questions

In completing this research project, you will learn how to care for perishable foods properly. Perishables are foods that spoil. Spoiled foods are usually not safe to eat because they can contain bacteria that can cause illness.

Choose one perishable food and report on how to keep it safe at home. Use the questions below to guide your investigation.

  • What are the temperature requirements for the perishable food I chose?
  • What happens to perishable foods when they are not properly refrigerated? Use the food you are researching as an example.
  • What can be done to prevent or slow the spoilage of perishable foods?
Look at the Web sites listed below to answer these questions. Take notes in the note-taking boxes. You may also visit other approved Web sites, or research perishable foods in encyclopedias or other resources at the library.

Then, follow Steps 3 and 4 to write your report.

Step 2. Research
