Get Weather Ready

Step 1. Questions

You may have seen pictures of damage caused by severe weather. Homes and property can be destroyed. Tornadoes, hurricanes, flash floods, and thunderstorms can all leave a path of destruction. There are ways you can help prepare for severe weather.

Use this e-Journal activity to become weather smart. Choose two severe weather conditions. Research how a community can prepare for them. Use the following questions to guide you along the way.
  • What weather conditions are you researching? Define each condition. Explain how they occur.

  • How are these weather emergencies predicted? Explain the conditions that lead up to these weather conditions. Describe how the storms can be forecasted.

  • What is the difference between a weather watch, warning, and alert?

  • What steps can people take before, during, and after these storms?
First, visit the Web sites listed in Step 2. Then, research the answers to these questions. Take notes in the note-taking boxes. You may also visit other approved Web sites, or research extreme weather in encyclopedias and other resources at the library.

Then, follow Steps 3 and 4 to write your report.
