Resisting Risk Behaviors

Step 1. Questions

Today’s teens may feel pressure to be sexually active. That pressure might come from the media, from peers, or from other sources. Nevertheless, the healthful choice is to resist this pressure. Abstinence is the choice not to be sexually active. Abstinence is the only method that is 100% effective in preventing pregnancy and STD’s. Abstinence is the expected standard for you and your peers.

For this e-Journal project, research and report on abstinence and its benefits. As you visit the Web sites listed in Step 2, look for answers to these questions.
  • How can teens resist the pressure to be sexually active?
  • Can someone who has been sexually active in the past switch to abstinence?
  • What organizations or programs exist to promote abstinence?
  • What are the consequences for teens who engage in sexual activity? Why is it difficult for teens to be parents?
First, visit the Web sites listed in Step 2 and take notes in the note-taking boxes. You may also discuss this topic with a physician, school nurse, or other trusted and responsible adult. Then follow Steps 3 and 4 to write your report.

Step 2. Research

Research answers for the questions you were asked in Step 1. Visit these Web sites. Take notes about them on this page, too!

Not Me, Not Now
The message of this site comes from teens talking to other teens. Listen to the music, read the billboards and TV commercials, and see what other teens have to say about abstinence.
