Safety Equipment

Step 1. Questions

Every year, hundreds of thousands of children and teens in the United States are treated for sports-related injuries. Playing sports is fun and good exercise. However, players should remember to stay safe.

For this e-Journal project, you will research and report on ways to prevent sports injuries. Include the use of safety equipment. You may choose to write an overview of safety in many sports. However, you might discuss one sport in detail.

Here are some questions to guide your research.
  • When should players wear proper safety equipment for a sport?
  • What kinds of safety equipment are recommended for different sports?
  • Which organizations approve safety equipment? Are these approvals important?
  • Along with wearing proper safety equipment, what is good advice for avoiding sports-related injuries?
  • What questions do you have about sports safety?
As you visit the Web sites listed in Step 2, take notes in the note-taking boxes. You may use search engines to find other Web sites to visit. You may also research sports safety at the library. You might wish to discuss this topic with a team coach, the manager or owner of a sporting goods store, or a student athlete.

When you are ready, follow Steps 3 and 4 to write your report.
