Study Side Effects

Step 1. Questions

Modern medicines have saved or improved a countless numbers of lives. Bacterial infections that once ran unchecked now can be slowed to a halt, thanks to antibiotics. Cancer once was almost always fatal, now anti-cancer drugs and other treatments allow many patients to survive the disease. And while no one has found the cure for headaches or the common cold, over-the-counter drugs make these conditions easier to bear.

Nevertheless, most medicines come with significant side effects. That’s why you should read the label of all medications, and follow doctor’s orders when taking prescription medicines.

For this e-Journal project, you will research and report on medicines. Discuss both medicines in general and a specific medication of your choice.

Here are questions to guide your research:
  • What rules should people follow when taking medicine?
  • What are some different categories of medicines? What do they do?
  • Choose a specific medicine, such as penicillin, erythromycin, or aspirin. When is the medicine used? What are its side effects?
  • What are alternative medicines?
As you visit the Web sites listed in Step 2, take notes in the note-taking boxes. You may also use search engines to find other Web sites to visit, or research medicine at the library. You may also find useful information by reading the labels on medicines at home. (Ask permission first from your parent or guardian.)

When you are ready, follow Steps 3 and 4 to write your report.

Step 2. Research

Research answers for the questions you were asked in Step 1. Visit these Web sites. Take notes about them on this page, too!

Alternative Medicine Online
