Pollution and Conservation

Step 1. Questions

Earth is home to vast forests, huge oceans, meadows, mountains, and many other kinds of places. For many reasons, we rely on these places and the plants and animals that live there. We eat food grown in fields, use wood products from forests, and breathe oxygen made by plants all over the world.

Unfortunately, human actions can harm plants and animals. They can damage other resources, too, including air, water, and soil. If we want to keep living on this planet, we must protect Earth’s important resources and conserve. To conserve means to use wisely.

For this e-Journal project, you will investigate pollution and conservation. You may research many kinds of pollution, or research one kind of pollution in great detail.

Here are questions to guide your investigation:
  • What causes pollution? What can be done to reduce it?
  • How can Earth’s resources be conserved? What are some ways that kids, teens, or adults are working to conserve resources?
  • In the United States, what government agency is charged with protecting the environment and reducing pollution?
  • What can you and your classmates do to reduce pollution, promote conservation, or improve the environment in your community?
Explore the Web sites listed in Step 2. You may also use search engines to search for a specific topic. Or research pollution and conservation at the library.

When you are ready, follow Steps 3 and 4 to write your report.

Step 2. Research

Research answers for the questions you were asked in Step 1. Visit these Web sites. Take notes about them on this page, too!
