Visit this Web site to see how decimals are used in the Indianapolis 500.

1. Here's how to use the Time/Speed Conversion Chart. If you know how many seconds it took a driver to go around the track once, you can use the chart to figure out how fast the driver was going. Suppose a driver went around the track in 45 seconds. Find 45.00 in the first column on the chart. Then look at the number to the right of 45.00. That number tells how many miles an hour the driver was going. How many miles an hour was the driver going?

_______ miles an hour

2. A driver's speed was 198.675. Use the chart to figure out how many seconds it took the driver to go around the track.

_________ seconds

3. One driver went around the track in 45.50 seconds. Another driver went around the track in 43.95 seconds. How many miles an hour faster did the second driver go? (Hint: Use the chart to figure out how many miles an hour each driver was going. Then find the difference.)

________ miles an hour

4. A driver drove around the track once at 196.507 miles an hour. She drove around again at 226.700 miles an hour. How many seconds did it take her to drive around the track twice?

________ seconds

5. Ray Harroun was the first Indianapolis 500 winner back in 1911. Joe Dawson won the next year. Which driver was faster? What was the difference in their speeds? (Find the column labeled Speed.)

________________________ was faster.

The difference in their speeds was ______________ miles an hour.

6. Who won the race in 1920? Was his speed faster or slower than Ray Harroun's speed in 1911? What was the difference in their speeds?

__________________________ won the race in 1920.

His speed was ________________ than Ray Harroun's speed in 1911.
(faster, slower)

The difference in their speeds was ______________ miles an hour.

7. Use the information from this Web site to make up a problem of your own in which you have to add or subtract decimals.
