Andy’s How To: Plan 4100
http://www.andyshowto.com/4100.htm

Use the floor plan of the house to answer the questions below. Show your work.

  1. If the owner of this home wanted to put a wallpaper border all around the top of the walls in the game room, how long of a border would she need? If the border is sold by the yard, how many yards will she need to buy?

  2. The homeowner buys a large circular rug for the floor of the den. The rug measures 20 feet in diameter. What is the area of the rug?

  3. The homeowner wants to paint the walls of the living room and dining room the same color. If the ceilings are 9 feet high, and one gallon of paint covers 400 square feet, how many gallons of paint should she buy? (Ignore the door and window openings.)

  4.

  5. If the owner puts wall-to-wall carpeting in the living room, dining room, and master bedroom, how many square yards of carpet does she need to buy? Round to the nearest tenth of a square yard. (Hint: 9 square feet = 1 square yard)

  6. If the owner wants to put a pool table measuring 6 feet by 12 feet lengthwise in the center of the game room, how much walking space would be left on each side of the table?

  7. How could you determine the area of the space in the game room not used by the 6 foot-by-12-foot pool table? Calculate the area of the unused space.

  8. The owner decides to tile the floors in the kitchen and eating areas. The tile she will use is sold in 12-inch-by-12-inch squares, at a cost of $1.50 per tile. How much will it cost her to buy all the tiles she will need?

  9. Each kitchen cabinet is 3 feet tall, 2 feet wide and 1.5 feet deep. Find the total volume of 4 cabinets.

Math at Home

Today I viewed a Web site with house floor plans. I calculated that a 16-foot-by-20-foot bedroom would need                               square feet of carpeting. I also discovered that to put up a wallpaper border you need to find the                               of the room.

You can find out more about this topic by asking your teacher or parents to show you other Web sites.
