Wind Chill Chart

See how the strength of the wind affects how cold you will feel outside.

Answer the questions below

  1. If the temperature at 6 A.M. is ¯22ºF, or 22 degrees below zero, and it increases 20 degrees by noon, what is the temperature at noon? Show how you got your answer.

  2. If the temperature is ¯5ºF at 11 A.M., and it warms up 12 degrees by 2 P.M., what is the temperature at 2 P.M.? Show how you got your answer.

  3. If  ¯9ºF is the low for the day and 23ºF is the high for the day, what is the difference between the high and low temperatures? Show how you got your answer.

Use the wind chill chart to solve the following problems.

  1. If the air temperature is ¯10ºF and the wind speed is 5 mph, what is the wind chill?

  2. If the temperature is ¯15ºF and the wind is blowing at 10 mph, how much colder does the wind make you feel than if the wind were not blowing? Show how you got your answer.

  3. If the temperature is 25ºF and the wind is blowing at 20 mph, how much colder does the wind make you feel than if the wind were not blowing? Show how you got your answer.

  4. If it is 10ºF with no wind, how much colder will it feel if the wind picks up to 15 mph? Show how you got your answer.

  5. If the temperature is ¯10ºF and the wind speed increases from 5 to 10 mph, what is the new wind chill? How much colder will it feel? Show how you got your answer.

  6. The wind is blowing at 15 mph, and it is 30ºF outside. If the wind remains the same, but the air temperature goes down 10 degrees, how many degrees will it feel like the temperature has dropped? Show how you got your answer.

Math at Home

Today I explored a Web site that gave information about how                     and                      are used to determine wind chill. If it is 35ºF outside, and the wind is blowing at 25 mph, the wind chill is               °F.

You can find out more about this topic by asking your teacher or parents to show you other Web sites.
