Europass Rail Program
http://www.eurorail.com/europass.htm

Find out what it costs to travel through some European countries by rail. How can you save money with smart planning?

Use the fare information at the Web site to solve the problems below. Then write a problem of your own.

  1. Jill and Akiko want to travel through France and Germany for a total of 6 days, riding the train each day. They both plan to buy Adult 1st Class tickets. Does it cost less to buy 2 Europass individual traveler tickets or to buy 2 Euro Saverpass tickets? How much money will Jill and Akiko save altogether by buying the less expensive tickets? How much money will each person save?

  2. Roger plans to travel through Italy and Spain with his friend Bill for a total of 8 days. He compares the prices for the Adult 1st Class Euro Saverpass ticket and the Adult 1st Class Europass individual traveler ticket, and chooses the Euro Saverpass ticket because it costs less. How much money per day will Roger save with this ticket?

  3. Sarah wants to travel through France, Italy, Austria, and Hungary. She buys a 15-day Adult 1st Class Europass ticket, and includes 2 zone add-ons. How much money per day will she pay for travel? Round your answer to the nearest penny.

  4. Tyrell buys a 15-day Adult 1st Class Europass. Amanda, who is traveling with friends, buys a 15-day Adult 1st Class Euro Saverpass. Who spends less per day for rail travel? How much less per day? Round to the nearest penny.

  5. Jennifer buys a 10-day Adult 1st Class Europass. Seth, who is traveling with friends, buys a 10-day Adult 1st Class Euro Saverpass, and includes 1 zone add-on. Who spends less per day for rail travel? How much less per day? Round to the nearest penny.

  6. Three adult friends plan to travel together by rail for 13 days during their European vacation. They will travel within the five base countries. What passes can they buy to travel for 13 days? Which will cost them the least? How much per day will it cost them to travel? Round to the nearest penny.

  7. Pretend you are 26 years old and planning your own trip within Europe. How long will your trip be and how many days of rail travel do you plan on? With whom will you travel? Will you add any additional travel zones? Write two choices that you might make and then figure out the rail travel cost per day for each. Which is the better rail travel bargain? Round to the nearest penny.

  8.

Math at Home

Today I explored a Web site showing prices for the Europass Rail Program. I found what it costs per day, or unit price, for different rail travel options. I used this information to solve some problems and write a problem of my own. For example, I figured out that it would cost Roger $                                  less per day to buy the 8-day Euro Saverpass ticket rather than the 8-day Europass individual traveler ticket.

You can find out more about this topic by asking your teacher or parents to show you other Web sites.
