Since most countries use the metric system, geographic information about a country is usually given in metric units. This information is often converted to customary units to make it more familiar to people who normally use customary measurements in their daily activities.
- Click Country Listing. Click the first letter of the country named in each problem below. Then click the country.
- Scroll down to "Geography" to find the information you will need to solve the problem.
- Change metric units to customary units and estimate your answers when needed. Some problems require more than one operation.
- Click the Back arrow twice to return to Country Listing.
- Repeat for each problem.

You can use 1 m = approximately 3.28 ft and 1 km = approximately 0.621 mi.
- What is the highest point in Albania expressed in feet and rounded to the nearest ten feet? What is the length of its coastline expressed in miles and rounded to the nearest mile?
- The highest point in North America is Mount McKinley, at 20,320 feet. What is the highest point in Argentina expressed in feet and rounded to the nearest hundred feet? Is the highest point in Argentina higher or lower than Mount McKinley? About how many feet higher or lower?
- What is the length of the coastline of France expressed in meters? What is the length of its coastline expressed in miles and rounded to the nearest ten miles?
- Bolivia, in South America, is a landlocked country bordered by five countries. What is the length of its shortest land boundary expressed in meters? What is the length of its shortest land boundary expressed in miles and rounded to the nearest mile?
- Mexico is bordered by three countries. What is the length of its longest land boundary expressed in miles and rounded to the nearest ten miles? How many days would it take you to walk the entire length of its longest land boundary if you averaged 25 miles of walking per day? Round to the nearest day.
- An airplane flying at an altitude of 28,500 feet approaches the highest point in India. Is the airplane flying high enough to avoid a crash if it stays at its present altitude? What is the height of the highest point in India expressed in feet and rounded to the nearest hundred feet? By about how many feet will it safely fly over this point, or about how many more feet must the airplane climb to avoid a crash?
- At 6,684 feet, Mount Mitchell, in North Carolina, is the highest point in the United States east of the Mississippi River. What is the highest point in Australia expressed in feet and rounded to the nearest ten feet? Is the highest point in Australia higher or lower than Mount Mitchell? About how many feet higher or lower?
- The tiny country of Monaco may be smaller than the town or city in which you live! How long is its land boundary with France expressed in meters? How long is that boundary expressed in feet and rounded to the nearest thousand feet?

Today I explored a Web site with information about countries from around the world. I explored geographic information such as lengths of land boundaries and highest and lowest elevations. Then, I changed metric units of length to customary units of length to solve problems. For instance, I figured out that Monaco's land boundary with France is only meters, or about feet, long!
