I Spy a Shape

Math Topic: Geometry

Grade: Pre-K

Materials
Colored construction paper, 8 ½ x 11-inch white paper, scissors, glue sticks, markers

Setup
Cut out rectangles, squares, triangles, and circles using construction paper in a variety of colors.

Procedure
Set up a table with the paper shapes, pieces of white paper, glues sticks, and markers. Engage your class in a discussion about the shapes they see around them. Play a game of "I Spy" by going around the circle and asking students to share what shapes they see. Then, show your class some classroom objects such as a chair, scissors, a book, a table, or a computer. Discuss how shapes can be hidden in the objects all around the classroom. Encourage your students to share the shapes they see on a pair of scissors, on a computer, etc. Then, invite students to create a picture of a familiar object using the precut shapes (i.e. a square makes a computer screen). Have students glue down and decorate their shapes to show how the shapes are used to create things we see around us every day. Display these works on the bulletin board.
