Rhino Families

Math Topic: Addition and Subtraction Facts

Grade: 1-3

Materials
Construction paper of various colors, markers, tape, pushpins

Setup
Use construction paper to create a safari scene with a watering hole in the middle. Cut out paper adult rhinos and baby rhinos. Write three numbers that make up a fact family on each adult rhino and pin it at the edge of the watering hole. Give each group of children four baby rhinos.

Procedure
Assign each group of children one fact family. Help children write an addition or subtraction sentence on each baby rhino. Then collect the baby rhinos and tape them in random order at the bottom of the bulletin board. Point to one of the adult rhinos. Then ask children to find the baby rhinos that show the fact family for the numbers on the adult rhino.
