Population of Texas Cities

Math Topic: Place Value

Grade: 4-6

Materials
Construction paper, markers, push pins

Setup
Outline the state of Texas on a large sheet of construction paper. Pin it on the bulletin board.

Procedure
Have students find the populations of the five largest cities and the populations of the five largest counties in Texas. Help students identify the locations of the cities and the counties on the outlined map. Then have students write the names of the cities and counties and write their populations on the map. Encourage students to include a picture, a postcard, or a drawing of the cities or counties with the map. Extend the activity by having students search for more statistical data about Texas to include in the map.
