Catalogs, play money, index cards, one
large envelope
Setup
Draw a chart on the bulletin board for
students to display data from their
surveys. Construct a grid for students to
complete a bar graph. Label the
horizontal axis "Number of
students."
Procedure
Have students play "Smart Shopping" using
the bulletin board display. Each player
takes four bills from the wallet without
looking; this is amount of money the
player can spend. Then he or she
"purchases" items on the bulletin board.
The player lists the items he or she
could buy, calculates the total amount of
the purchases, and finds the amount of
change he or she would get. Extend the
activity by adding and subtracting
decimals using advertisements from
supermarkets.
