The Wheels on the Truck

Math Topic: Number Sense and Sorting

Grade: Pre-K

Materials
Colored construction paper, old magazines, pushpins, scissors, and markers

Setup
Cut out 10 black circles to represent wheels. Group and place wheels along the top of a bulletin board to represent the numbers in order from 1 to 4. Collect magazines that have a variety of pictures of transportation vehicles.

Procedure
Place the collection of magazines and pairs of scissors at a workstation. Have a class discussion about transportation vehicles. Generate conversation by asking students how they get to school each morning, what kinds of transportation they ride, and what transportation they see on the streets and sidewalks. Show the class the bulletin board and, as a group, count each group of wheels along the top of the board. Then, encourage your students to visit the workstation and look through some magazines to find and cut out different type of transportation vehicles. As they find and cut out these pictures, invite students to come and hang their pictures on the board underneath the correct number of wheels (i.e. car goes underneath the "4 wheels" category).
