Getting
Around
Math Topic: Addition
and Subtraction Strategies
Grade:
1-3
Materials
A large sheet of construction paper, a
large picture of a city bus, ten index
cards, markers, pushpins
Setup
Draw a map of a bus route as shown on the
bulletin board below. Cut out the picture
of a city bus. Write "5 people on board"
on a self-stick note and place it on the
bus. Pin the bus next to "Start." Write
"getting on" on five index cards and
"getting off" on the other five
cards.
Procedure
Give each group of children a "getting
on" card and a "getting off" card. Let a
volunteer "drive" the bus to the first
stop. Ask one group to assign two numbers
less than 20, one for "number of people
getting on" and one for "number of people
getting off" and write the numbers on the
cards. Pin the cards at the first stop.
Ask the class: "How many people are still
on the bus?" Let another volunteer drive
to the next stop and continue the
activity with the cards of another group.
You may want to repeat this activity
several times a week.
