Grade 3, Unit 2, Lesson 1
One day Modest Mussorgksy,
a composer from Russia, went to visit an exhibition of
pictures by a friend of his who was an artist. At the
exhibition, there were watercolor paintings hanging from
the walls for people to look at.
While Mussorgsky was there, he had a wonderful idea. He
decided he would compose a piece of music that could be
played at the exhibition. His composition, called Pictures
at an Exhibition, would have eleven sections. Each
section would be for every painting in the exhibition.
He also composed a section to be played when people walked
from painting to painting.
Like other composers who lived when he did, Mussorgsky
liked to create music that made the listener think of
a scene or picture. In Pictures at an Exhibition,
each section has music that sounds like the picture. In
the section called "Bydlo (The Farm Cart)," you can hear
the wheels of the cart as they plod through the mud.
