Learn More About Mexican Music

Grade 2, Spotlight on Celebrations, Cinco de Mayo

You know that folk music can do many things. It can tell a story, describe a feeling, or be used to celebrate. Sharing the same music is one way that people make a community. Folk music tells us something about the people who create it.

Mexican music can tell us something about the people of Mexico. The games children play are the same as those in the United States.

Listen to and play "A la rueda de San Miguel," "Bate, bate," "Juan Pírulero", or "Matarile." Do you know other games that are played the same way?

There are Mexican songs about things and people. "El paloma y la paloma" is about the birds that are a symbol of happiness and freedom. "La bella hortelana" is about a beautiful gardener. Do you know other songs that are about birds or gardening?

"Los sones de mariachi" is music for a mariachi band. The mariachi is a popular Mexican musical group with several performers. Some play string instruments, some play brass, and some sing. Sometimes the instrument players sing, too.

Mariachi bands play for special occasions and help the people celebrate. Have you ever heard Mariachi music outside of school? If so, where? What musical groups help your community celebrate?

Think about what Mexican folk music tells you about the Mexican people. How do you think their music is the same or different from people who live in other places?
