Learn More About Folk Music from Brazil

Grade 3, Unit 6, Lesson 7

Just like the United States, Brazil is a very big country with many different types of folk music. Read more about some of the different types of Brazilian folk music below.

Samba is both an Afro-Brazilian couple dance, as well as a popular musical form. Samba is the official music of carnaval. Carnaval happens each year in February or March in Brazil, and it is a huge party for everyone. There are giant bands with hundreds of drums and percussion instruments that parade through the streets like a moving thunderstorm playing samba.

Cantigas de roda are children's game songs kind of like "Ring Around the Rosey." The song "Pezinho" is also an example of a cantiga.

Forró is like the country music of Brazil. It usually has an accordion, a drum, and a triangle. With only these three instruments, the music makes anyone want to dance!
