Have students say "Sheep in the Meadow" CD 1:7 as they pat with the beat.
Slowly repeat Line 1 for them, in rhythm. Using the Beat Map, guide students to write
the word or words that they hear spoken during each beat. (Repeat this process for
Lines 2–4; omit the naming of months.) Help students compare the beats of each
line by asking questions such as:
- Which lines begin with one word per beat? (Lines 1, 2, and 4)
- Are there any beats with no words? (Last beat of Lines 2 and 4)
- Which beats have only part of a word? (Line 1, last two beats)
CREATE
As a class, write a sentence about an animal. Discuss and try out ways to
speak the words of the sentence in rhythm; have students pat the beat as they
try different rhythms. Make a class decision about the best rhythm. Then have
teams of four students work together to write the rhythm on a Beat Map.
