Compare Characteristics of Game Songs

Once students have learned and played each of the game songs "Circle 'Round the Zero," CD 12:7 and "Jingle at the Window" CD 12:13, invite them to examine and compare the songs for similarities and differences. Some possibilities:

  • meter
  • rhythm
  • pitch sets
  • how the game is played (circle formation, and so forth)

EXTEND

Repeat this comparison activity using "Let Us Chase the Squirrel" (p. 248) and "Kuma San" (p. 244). Encourage students to explore cultural and linguistic similarities and differences.
