After listening to "Amazing Grace" CD 1:26-1:29, discuss with students differences between versions that they hear. Guide students to select musical elements to compare, and have them write those elements in the first row of their Comparison Charts. (Possible categories: vocal tone color, vocal ornamentation, instruments used, tempo, dynamics, meter, texture, form, mood, pitch/rhythm embellishments, and so forth). Then have students listen to "Amazing Grace" CD 1:26-1:29 again, and complete their Comparison Charts by writing short descriptions of the musical elements heard in each version. As you discuss their findings as a class, help students distinguish between musical facts and personal opinions.

CREATE

Invite volunteers to sing solo verses of "Amazing Grace." Encourage them to vocally and stylistically reproduce one of the lesson versions; alternatively, they can create their own original version.
