In addition to the word painting of "The Trout," the song tells a story. Have students use a Flow Chart to identify the sequence of events in "The Trout." Through discussion, help them establish who the characters of the story are (narrator, fisherman, trout) and what the setting is (a fishing stream on a sunny day). Remind them to follow the repeat sign of the song so that they consider the entire story's events. Have students share their completed sequence charts to find out whether they identified the same story events (students charts may vary but should indicate the story arc as indicated below).
EXTEND
Invite students to research Franz Schubert's art songs. Help them find English translations so that they can determine whether the songs tell a story or not. After students sequence at least one other song in addition to "The Trout," invite them to compare the level of detail found in the songs' stories.
