Before beginning the unit, "Our Musical World" with students, discuss with them what they know about music from around the world. Guide them to write their thoughts in the left-hand column of a KWL Chart. In another class discussion, invite them to share ideas of what they would like to know about music from around the world that they do not already know. Guide students to add these ideas to the middle column of the KWL chart. You may wish to have students work with the KWL chart after each lesson in the unit. When students have experienced all of the music in Unit 3, work with them to complete the right-hand column of the chart, detailing what they learned in the unit. Encourage them to reflect on the ideas in the "K" and "W" columns after they have completed all three columns.
EXTEND
Ask students to write words or phrases and/or draw small pictures to represent their impressions of music from each of the continents. Alternatively, they can cut out pictures from old magazines for their representations. Have them assemble their pictures or words into collages. Display the collages so that students can see their classmates observations of music from around the world.
