Rhythm Prism

Identify Rhythm Patterns in a Song

Ask students to pat the rhythm of the words as they listen to "Great Big House" CD 1:18. Guide them as they identify the four different two-beat rhythm patterns used in the song. Help students write each rhythm pattern on one of the four sides of the prism (the two faces of the prism remain blank for this activity):

Pattern 1, Side 1 =

Pattern 2, Side 2 =

Pattern 3, Side 3 =

Pattern 4, Side 4 =

Alternatively you may wish to provide students with printouts of the prism pattern with the rhythm patterns already on the sides. Help students assemble their prisms. As they listen to, or sing, "Great Big House," have them display each pattern as it is heard or sung.

EXTEND

Working in groups of four, have students arrange their prisms to show the rhythm of the first or second 4-measure groups of "Great Big House" (each prism represents one measure). When students are successful in their groups of four, two groups can put their sets of prisms together to show the entire song.

An assembled prism for this activity will look like this:
