Transposition Wheel

Transpose Pentatonic Songs

After singing "Arirang" CD 3:13 have students recall the song's starting pitch (D, so) and tonal center (G, do). Then have them cut out the do re mi so la overlay of the Transposition Wheel and discuss how to position it properly over the larger wheel (so is placed on the D wedge). As they sing "Arirang" with pitch syllables, direct them to touch each pitch on the wheel. Then choose a new starting pitch for the song, and have students turn the overlay to show the new tone set, and repeat the above process. Students can use the Transposition Wheel with other pentatonic songs such as "Amazing Grace," p. 19 and "Fung Yang Song," p. 58.
