Ask students to listen as you play two different found sounds. Guide a discussion that encourages students to compare and contrast properties of each sound. Aid their thinking process in identifying and analyzing same and different elements by asking questions such as:
- What is the instrument made of?
- How is it played?
- What shape is it?
- How do these characteristics influence the instrument's sound?
CREATE
Ask students to create their own found sounds. As a class, help them establish a set of criteria to classify their found sounds, such as metal, wood, struck, shaken, and so forth. Create and post a class list of found sounds that students can use for future improvisation and composition opportunities.
