After students listen to "Guantanamera" CD 11:24, invite them to bring in recordings of other examples of salsa music. Alternatively, or additionally, have them research on the Internet to find out more about salsa music and hear more examples. As a class, discuss characteristics of salsa music. Then have students work individually to list characteristics of salsa music on webs. When students have completed their webs, bring them together again as a class to consolidate their findings on a class web (you may wish to project the class web, or draw it on a chalkboard and have volunteers fill in the circles).

Invite students to choose an Orff orchestration, such as "Walk in the Parlor," p. 227. Discuss how the arrangement could be altered for a salsa style. Invite students to arrange salsa versions. After performing their new versions, help students evaluate the results and adjust their arrangements.
