About the Site

The Dogs Web site from The Waltham Centre for Pet Care and Nutrition features data about many dog breeds. In addition to engaging photographs and detailed descriptions, this site offers information about selecting, training, feeding, grooming, and playing with dogs. Links to canine events, veterinarian's advice, and a question and answer section are also included.

What to Do

  1. Have students explore information about one or more dog breeds that interest them.

  2. If you wish to have students explore Training or Exercise and Play, instruct them to close the Gallery browser window to return to the main page.

  2. Go back and click on Breeds by Group. Choose Hound Group then Beagle.
  3. Read the information about the beagle. Why would this breed make a good pet?

  • Take students to a dog park or dog show and see if they recognize the breeds of any dogs they might see.

Mary Overby, who studies and plays African-Cuban rhythms on drums, took these photographs on a trip to Cuba. Links to related sites are also accessible. What to Do

  1. As students view the photographs, ask them to identify facets of Cuban life that are similar to theirs.

About the Site

The Yahooligans search engine for children includes this Around the World section and Country directory. Here students can browse a list of over 150 countries. When the name of a country is clicked, a list of links is displayed that offers maps, statistics, photographs, country profiles, and other information for investigation. You may want to preview the site and select several specific countries and sites for students to explore. You might arrange students in groups and have each group study a different country that you assign.

What to Do

  1. Discuss with students what information would be helpful if they were moving to a new country.

  2. Encourage them to explore the links for the countries they have chosen or you have assigned.

  3. You may wish to have students draw an outline of the country, illustrate its map and flag, and include the facts they discover about the country.

TheSchoolReport.com is a Web site that contains information, reports, comparisons, and ratings for schools throughout the country. Students will be able to zero in on particular towns or counties in a state and check out the school population, student-teacher ratio, and more. For further research, the Web site offers a free Community Calculator. Using this device, students can find profiles of communities that have characteristics similar to their own or another chosen city. The Web site is sponsored by an organization for real estate professionals to help them advise relocating families.

What to Do

  1. Help students navigate the Web site as directed. Note that they must enter the information for a school report first.

  2. They can enter their own or any other city and state to access the school statistics. Only then will the Community Content be accessible in the left frame.

  3. To find a matching community, students must fill in a city or zip code and the city or state where they want to find a match.

  4. Note that data may be sketchy for some very small communities or very large cities. If this occurs, suggest that students use nearby locations.
