About the Site

Students at Alderwood Elementary School in Bellingham, Washington, created this online museum that features stories about their ancestors' immigration to America. The museum contains three wings: Our Immigration Wing, the Ellis Island Wing and the Native American Wing, where stories, photographs, and links to related sites can be found. The site also contains an audio clip with greetings in Vietnamese and Spanish.

What to Do

  1. Children have read about a trip to America from Japan in their text.

  2. Tell children that the Web site has family stories from students in an elementary school in Washington. The stories tell how people's families came to America.

  3. Guide students through the site.

  4. If time permits, have students click Russia and the Ukraine to read Sasha's story and Vietnam to read Natasha's story.

Suggested Additional Activities

  • Have students find and print a map of the Unites States. Have them play the game again. This time, have them keep track of who is immigrating and from what country. Have them find where the different groups of immigrants settled after coming to the United States. Have them label their map to show where the immigrants lived in America.

  • Have students interview someone who has immigrated to this country. Have them write a report or class presentation about what they learned.

What to Do

  1. Encourage students to think about what United States city it might be exciting to visit.

  2. Be sure that they correctly type the names of the cities and the abbreviations for the states.

  3. Note that you may have to have them select a large nearby city if the MapQuest cannot find your hometown.

  4. If time permits, you may wish to have students click Maps to explore maps and addresses from around the world.
