Pacific Volcanoes (p. 267)

Step 1. Questions

The Hawaiian Islands are a chain of volcanoes in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Many scientists go on expeditions to study these volcanic islands. They try to understand how the volcanoes were formed in the past and how the volcanoes will behave in the future.

Write a fictional narrative about a scientific expedition to study the Hawaiian Islands. To do so, you will need to research the volcanoes of the Pacific. Here are some questions to guide your research:
  • What are volcanoes?
  • How did the Hawaiian Islands form in the Pacific Ocean?
  • Which volcanoes are the most active?
  • What types of equipment and transportation do scientists need to study volcanoes in the Pacific Ocean?
  • How do scientists draw scientific conclusions and solve problems when they go on expeditions to study volcanoes?
Are you ready? Begin by visiting the Web sites listed in Step 2. Look for answers to the questions above, and write down what you learn in the note-taking boxes.

You may use search engines to research other Web sites. Or research volcanoes of the Pacific at the library. When you are ready, follow Steps 3 and 4 to write your fictional narrative.

Step 2. Research

Research answers for the questions you were asked in Step 1. Visit these Web sites. Take notes about them on this page, too!
