Surf vs. Sand (p. 341)

Step 1. Questions

A solution to a problem does not always make everyone happy. For example, measures taken to save beaches from erosion may take away waves for surfing. The result? Happy beach goers, but angry surfers.

Write a persuasive essay about whether erosion control measures should take into account the concerns of surfers or sunbathers. To do so, you will research beach erosion and the control measures that geologists and engineers are trying. Here are some questions to guide your research:
  • What is beach erosion?
  • What are some ways to control beach erosion?
  • How can erosion control measures affect surfing waves?
  • Are there erosion control measures that could satisfy both beach goers and surfers?
Are you ready? Begin by visiting the Web sites listed in Step 2. Look for answers to the questions above, and write down what you learn in the note-taking boxes.

You may use search engines to research other Web sites. Or research opinions about erosion control at the library. When you are ready, follow Steps 3 and 4 to write your persuasive essay.

Step 2. Research

Research answers for the questions you were asked in Step 1. Visit these Web sites. Take notes about them on this page, too!

Beach Erosion
This Web page discusses a possible cause of beach erosion, as well as some affected beaches in Massachusetts. Read about efforts to save the beaches under "Renourishment Projects." This site was designed by a high school science class.
Take Notes:

Coastal Erosion and Beach Loss in Hawaii
Learn about the problem of beach erosion in Hawaii at this Web site from the University of Hawaii. Be sure to read about why beaches need sand. You'll also find information about efforts to save beaches through the "New Coastal Lands Program (NCLP)."
Take Notes:

Surfers' Artificial Reef
Read this article from Asbury Park Press, a New Jersey newspaper. It explains why surfers' concerns about disappearing waves should be taken into consideration. Look for information about the negative effects that environmental regulations had on the surfing business, the surrounding community, and the economy. You'll also learn about proposals for an artificial wave-producing reef to keep the surfing industry alive in this New Jersey county.
