Animal Camouflage (p. 87)

Step 1. Questions

Leafy sea dragons are protected because they look just like the seaweed they live in. Many animals use camouflage to protect themselves. Other animals use different methods of protection, such as changing color or giving off a bad smell.

Write a report about how animals protect themselves and stay safe. Here are some questions to guide your research:
  • What adaptations help animals stay safe?
  • What adaptations protect animals against enemies?
  • What types of defenses or methods help keep you safe?
Are you ready? Begin by visiting the Web sites listed in Step 2. Look for answers to the questions above, and write down what you learn in the boxes.

You may use search engines to research other Web sites. Or research animal defenses at the library. When you are ready, follow Steps 3 and 4 to write your report.

Step 2. Research

Research answers for the questions you were asked in Step 1. Visit these Web sites. Take notes about them on this page, too!

Animals on Defense
This page is sponsored by the University of Richmond. Click on the links to learn about the four main ways animals stay safe and sound. You will learn about camouflage, hibernation, migration, and mimicry. As you read, think about how migration is similar to actions you might take to stay safe and comfortable.
Take Notes:

Deceptive Coloration
This Web site from New Hampshire Public Television tells all about "deceptive coloration," which is when an animal tries to disguise itself by changing color. Learn about the many different ways that animals blend into their surroundings to avoid being eaten.

The Art of Camouflage
Learn about camouflage by making your own! In this page created by a professor at the University of Florida, you will learn how animals disguise themselves by making your own "camouflage art." Before you get started, be sure to read about the different kinds of camouflage and the animals that use them.
