The Importance of Habitats (p. 119)

Step 1. Questions

Tommy's letter points out the importance of saving the mangroves of Florida. He's worried about what could happen if the mangroves disappear. Did you know that habitats and ecosystems are disappearing around the world every day?

Write a persuasive letter about the importance of saving an endangered habitat. To do so, you will research habitats that are at risk and need preservation. Here are some questions to guide your research:
  • Where are some endangered or threatened habitats around the world?
  • What is being done to help protect them?
  • What will happen if they are not saved?
  • Which one of them seems to you to need special help?
  • How can you convince people that it should be saved?
Are you ready? Begin by visiting the Web sites listed in Step 2. Look for answers to the questions above, and write down what you learn in the boxes.

You may use search engines to research other Web sites. Or research endangered habitats at the library. When you are ready, follow Steps 3 and 4 to write your letter.

Step 2. Research

Research answers for the questions you were asked in Step 1. Visit these Web sites. Take notes about them on this page, too!
