Fossil Hunting (p. 164)

Step 1. Questions

Can you imagine finding an insect preserved in amber, or the fossil of an ancient animal? Fossils are important remnants from the past. Scientists study them to learn about plants and animals that lived long ago.

Write an expository essay about animal fossils. To do so, you will need to research how fossils are formed and what they can tell us. Here are some questions to guide your research:
  • What are fossils?
  • How do animals become fossils?
  • What can we learn from fossils? What do they tell us about the past?
  • How do scientists find and study dinosaur fossils?
Are you ready? Begin by visiting the Web sites in Step 2. Look for answers to the questions above, and write down what you learn in the boxes.

You may use search engines to research other Web sites. Or research dinosaur fossils at the library. When you are ready, follow Steps 3 and 4 to write your expository essay.

Step 2. Research

Research answers for the questions you were asked in Step 1. Visit these Web sites. Take notes about them on this page, too!
