Chemical Reactions (p. 448)

Step 1. Questions

Chemical reactions can take many forms. A log can turn into ash. A raw egg can become a boiled egg. An acid and a base can turn into a gas and a salt.

Write an explanatory essay about how to make or do something using an acid-base reaction. To do so, you will research acids, bases, and reactions that involve them. Here are some questions to guide your research:
  • What is a chemical reaction?
  • What are acids and bases?
  • What are some things that acids react with?
  • What can happen when acids and bases mix?
  • How can people use acid-base reactions to make or do something?
Are you ready? Begin by visiting the Web sites listed in Step 2. Look for answers to the questions above, and write down what you learned in the note-taking boxes.

You may use search engines to research other Web sites. Or research acids and bases at the library. When you have finished, follow Steps 3 and 4 to write your essay.

Step 2. Research

Research answers for the questions you were asked in Step 1. Visit these Web sites. Take notes about them on this page, too!

Toolbox Tip: Click here to learn how to print a Web page.

Chemical Reactions
This Web site discusses many chemistry topics. Start by reading the page about chemical reactions. Find out what happens during a chemical reaction. Then click ACIDS AND BASES in the right margin. You can also take a self-scoring quiz to see how well you understand the concepts. These pages come from Chem4kids.com, a private educational Web site.
Take Notes:

Cabbage Juice Indicator
Here's a fun activity from PBS that will help you learn about acids and chemical reactions. With an adult's permission and supervision, try the Cabbage Juice Indicator to test the acidity of certain liquids.
Take Notes:

Fizzing and Foaming
This page is from a chemistry professor's Web site called Science is Fun. This experiment involves using an acid-base reaction to produce bubbles. Read the experiment and learn how it is done. Then read about how the reaction produces bubbles. Again, try the experiment with an adult's permission and supervision.
