Bear-Proof Suit (p. 407)

Step 1. Questions

People can choose all kinds of personal protective gear to guard their health and safety. However, it takes a lot of research and testing to make gear that works.

Write a fictional narrative involving a bear-proof suit that you would invent. You will research bears and the flaws in Hurtubise's bear-proof suit. Here are some questions to guide your research:
  • In what ways can bears be dangerous?
  • How can people protect themselves from bears?
  • What would you need to make a bear-proof suit? What special uses would the suit have?
  • What were the flaws in Hurtubise's suit?
Are you ready? Begin by visiting the Web sites listed in Step 2. Look for answers to the questions above, and write down what you learn in the note-taking boxes.

You may use search engines to research other Web sites, or visit your local library for more information. When you have finished, follow Steps 3 and 4 to write your story.

Step 2. Research

Research answers for the questions you were asked in Step 1. Visit these Web sites. Take notes about them on this page, too!

Slide Shows
This Web page is from the North American Bear Center. Click on HOW DANGEROUS ARE BLACK BEARS? to find out what a black-bear watcher should know. Look at the images and read the captions. Note details that might help someone stay safe around bears. When the slide show is over, click END SLIDE SHOW. Then visit GRIZZLY BEARS to learn more about this kind of bear.

Bear-Proof Suit Scares Off Grizzly
Read this article from New Scientist, a science and technology Web site. The article describes some of the tests performed on one of Hurtubise's suits. Look for details about how the bear damaged the suit. What features of the suit did Hurtubise need to improve? Keep these things in mind as you create your own suit.

Bear Facts
This page from the Forest Service comes from Tongass National Forest in Alaska. It offers smart advice on how to travel through "Bear Country." As you read, think about ways to protect yourself from bears. Do any of these ideas inspire you to invent a bear-proof suit? Write down your ideas.
