To Space and Back (p. 217)

Step 1. Questions

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be an astronaut? Here's your chance--and you don't even have to leave Earth!

Imagine what it's like to travel to space. Write a fictional narrative about this trip. First, you will research what astronauts do and what life in space is like. Here are some questions to guide your research:
  • How do astronauts prepare for a shuttle launch?
  • What kinds of things do astronauts do in space?
  • How do astronauts eat, sleep, and breathe in space?
  • What do you think astronauts find most exciting about their job? What do you think they find most difficult?
Are you ready? Begin by visiting the Web sites in Step 2. Look for answers to the questions above, and write down what you learn in the boxes.

You may use search engines to research other Web sites. Or research astronauts and space exploration at the library. When you are ready, follow Steps 3 and 4 to write your story.

Step 2. Research

Research answers for the questions you were asked in Step 1. Visit these Web sites. Take notes about them on this page, too!

Toolbox Tip: Click here to learn whether you can trust all the information you find on the Internet.

Virtual Solar System
Learn all about the solar system. It'll help you understand what astronauts do in space. Click on the planets in the top left of the page to read some interesting facts. Make sure you take notes so you can use what you learned in your story.
Take Notes:

Life in Space
This site from the European Space Agency is full of information about astronauts, life in space, how astronauts prepare for missions, and space stations. Check out each of the links and imagine what it's like to be an astronaut. Make sure you take notes for your story.
Take Notes:

Shuttle Flight Procedure
Watch an animation that shows a space shuttle launch. You will see the steps of launching a shuttle, and how the shuttle lands back on Earth. This might be an exciting event to include in your story.
