The Matter of Water (p. 259)

Step 1. Questions

You have read a poem about a kind of water: freezing rain. The poet uses descriptive words to help you picture what happens when rain freezes.

Write a descriptive essay about a type or body of water that is important to you. In order to do this, you will research the water that is all around us. Here are some questions to guide your research:
  • How much water is there on Earth?
  • How much of Earth's water is freshwater? How much is saltwater?
  • What are some different bodies of water?
  • Why is water important?
  • How can you describe water in an interesting way?
Are you ready? Begin by visiting the Web sites in Step 2. Look for answers to the questions above, and write down what you learn in the boxes.

You may use search engines to research other Web sites. You can also research water at the library. When you are ready, follow Steps 3 and 4 to write your descriptive essay.

Step 2. Research

Research answers for the questions you were asked in Step 1. Visit these Web sites. Take notes about them on this page, too!
