Want to Be a Scientist? (p. 281)

Step 1. Questions

You have read about Neil deGrasse Tyson, an astrophysicist at the American Museum of Natural History in New York. Neil studies how the universe works.

What areas of science interest you? Write a report about some of the fascinating careers that you could have in science. In order to do this, you will have to research different fields of science. Here are some questions to guide your research:
  • What are some interesting fields of science?
  • How do people get jobs in these fields?
  • Where do scientists work?
  • What are some interesting science jobs for the future?
Are you ready? Begin by visiting the Web sites in Step 2. Look for answers to the questions above, and write down what you learn in the boxes.

You may use search engines to research other Web sites. Or research science careers at the library. When you are ready, follow Steps 3 and 4 to write your report.

Step 2. Research

Research answers for the questions you were asked in Step 1. Visit these Web sites. Take notes about them on this page, too!

Toolbox Tip: Click here to learn about graphics, audio, and video on Web sites.

OLogy

Cool Careers in Science
This PBS page gives descriptions of interesting scientists and the careers they have chosen. The careers range from ecologist to astronomer volcanologist, robot designer, arachnologist (specializing in tarantulas!), and science teacher. Follow the links at the bottom of each page to see each scientist's answers to kids' questions about their careers.

Adventures in Science and Technology
This is a Canadian government Web site designed for students who are interested in science as a career. Click on UNDERSTANDING SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY to learn answers to some of your basic questions about science. Then click on PHYSICS, BIOLOGY, CHEMISTRY, ENGINEERING, or COMPUTER SCIENCE to find out much more!
