Slip and Slide (p. 382)

Step 1. Questions

Penguins cannot fly, but they can walk. When penguins need to move fast, they swim in the ocean or slide along ice.

Write about how penguins slide on ice. First read about how penguins move. Then read about a special force that helps them move. Here are some questions to help you:
  • How do penguins slide on ice?
  • How does friction affect the way penguins move?
  • Why is ice slippery?
  • Is ice a good surface for moving fast?
Are you ready? Visit the Web sites in Step 2. Look for answers to the questions above. Write down what you learn in the boxes.

With teacher supervision, you may search other Web sites. You also can learn about friction from books at the library. When you are ready, go on to Steps 3 and 4.

Step 2. Research

Find answers to the questions in Step 1. Visit these Web sites. Take notes on this page.
