Monarch Butterfly (p. 17)

Step 1. Questions

Like all living things, a monarch butterfly changes as it grows. Did you know that you change too? You are changing every day! You can do some things today that you could not do last year. What would you like to be able to do when you are older?

Write a poem about how you have changed as you have grown and how you will continue to change. Before writing your poem, you will need to research how humans change as they grow. Here are some questions to guide your research:
  • What can babies do?
  • How do babies change as they grow?
  • What can third graders do?
  • What things are you waiting to do when you grow older?
Are you ready? Begin by visiting the Web sites listed in Step 2. Look for answers to the questions above, and write down what you learn in the boxes.

With teacher supervision, you may use search engines to research other Web sites. You also can research how children grow and change at the library. When you are ready, follow Steps 3 and 4 to write your poem.

Step 2. Research

Research answers for the questions you were asked in Step 1. Visit these Web sites. Take notes about them on this page, too!

How Children Grow
This article is meant for new babysitters. It explains what children are like and how they grow from birth to five years old. There is a lot to read, so choose only the most important information. Do the descriptions remind you of yourself when you were younger? Might you want to be a babysitter when you get older?

The Learning Zone: Reproduction
This Web site can help you learn about the human life cycle. Look at the pictures of the baby through adult stages. Click each picture to learn more about that stage of life. Although the site talks about the life cycle of a boy, girls grow and change in the same way.

What Do You Like to Do?
Click the name of a subject that you like. You will see some different jobs that you can have when you grow up. Which career might you like to have? If you would like to read about each job, click the name of each job to learn more. There is a lot to read, so choose words and sentences that make sense to you.
