Desert Birds (p. 62)

Step 1. Questions

All animals have some things in common. They all need air, water, food, and shelter. But the way the animals look and live often is very different. Roadrunners and elf owls both live in the desert. However, they hunt at different times of the day.

Choose two different animals to describe. They may live in the same environment, such as two ocean animals. They also could be two of your favorite animals from different places. Tell how the animals are alike and different. Here are some questions to guide your research:
  • Which two animals will I write about?
  • How does each animal look?
  • Where does each animal live?
  • What does each animal eat?
Are you ready? Begin by visiting the Web sites listed in Step 2. Look for answers to the questions above. Write down what you learn in the boxes.

With teacher supervision, you may use search engines to find other Web sites. You also can research animals at the library. When you are ready, follow steps 3 and 4 to write your report.

Step 2. Research

Research answers for the questions you were asked in Step 1. Visit these Web sites. Take notes about them on this page, too!
