Once Upon a Woodpecker (p. 103)

Step 1. Questions

Woodpeckers use special body parts to find food and to survive. A woodpecker has some helpful adaptations, and so do people.

Write an essay about the adaptations you have that help you get through your day. Before you write, you will need to research the special body parts that people have. Here are some questions to guide your research:
  • How does my brain help me survive?
  • In what ways do my hair, skin, and muscles help me?
  • How do the five senses help people?
Are you ready? Begin by visiting the Web sites listed in Step 2. Look for answers to the questions above. Write down what you learn in the boxes.

With teacher supervision, you may use search engines to find other Web sites. You also can research human adaptations at the library. When you are ready, follow Steps 3 and 4 to write your essay.

Step 2. Research

Research answers for the questions you were asked in Step 1. Visit these Web sites. Take notes about them on this page, too!
