Slide on the Shore (pp. 210–211)

Step 1. Questions

Many people enjoy living near or at the top of a cliff, but landslides can cause part of a cliff to collapse. People have developed ways to help prevent landslides from happening.

Write a report about the causes of landslides and how people try to prevent them. Here are some questions to guide your research:
  • What is a landslide?
  • What causes a landslide?
  • What are the effects of a landslide?
  • What can be done to prevent a landslide?
Are you ready? Begin by visiting the Web sites listed in Step 2. Look for answers to the questions above. Write down what you learn in the note-taking boxes.

With teacher supervision, you may use search engines to research other Web sites. You also can research landslides at the library. When you are ready, follow Steps 3 and 4 to write your report.

Step 2. Research

Research answers to the questions you were asked in Step 1. Visit these Web sites. Take notes about them on this page, too!
