A Very Useful Machine (p. 472)

Step 1. Questions

Most of the machines that you use are compound machines. Compound machines are those that are made from two or more simple machines. A car is an example of a compound machine. Some of the simple machines that make up a car include levers, screws, and wheels and axles.

Write a report that explains how to use a compound machine. For example, you might choose a bicycle, a pair of scissors, or a car. To write your report, you will need to research compound machines. Here are some questions to guide your research:
  • What are some compound machines?
  • What are the different types of simple machines?
  • Which simple machines make up the compound machine?
  • How does the compound machine work?
Are you ready? Begin by visiting the Web sites in Step 2. Look for answers to the questions above, and write down what you learn in the note-taking boxes.

With teacher supervision, you may use search engines to research other Web sites. You also can research compound machines at the library. When you are ready, follow Steps 3 and 4 to write your report.

Step 2. Research

Research answers to the questions you were asked in Step 1. Visit these Web sites. Take notes about them on this page, too!
